CIML girls' basketball: East's physical defense limits Southeast Polk

By BILL KOPATICH
Register Correspondent

Holding a team to 35 percent shooting from the field is considered good defense. Holding a team to 15 percent shooting is rare.

How about holding a team to 9 percent shooting? That's what fifth-ranked East did during a 51-20 win over visiting Southeast Polk in nonconference girls' basketball Tuesday.

"We did what we set out to do on defense," said East sophomore Shronda Butts, who led all scorer with 17 points. "We held their main players to under 10 points, and that's what we wanted to do."

East held the Rams to 3-of-32 shooting from the field. When the Scarlets weren't using their smothering matchup zone to contest shots, they were forcing 26 turnovers.

"We play a really physical defense," Butts said.

Sara Wagner made a 3-point basket on the left wing to give East a 20-5 lead in the second quarter before Southeast Polk even made a field goal. The Scarlets never led by less than double digits after that.

"We did a good job of running the ball up court and getting our shots," Wagner said. "We were able to get everyone involved."

After not giving up a field goal until midway through the second quarter, East scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 35-11 lead.

"We always play hard," Butts said. "We have to fight the whole time."

SOUTHEAST POLK (20) - W. Van Wyk 0-3 0-0 0, McNeece 1-5 1-4 3, Michael 0-2 0-0 0, Krull 0-4 0-0 0, Evans 0-3 1-2 1, L. Van Wyk 1-6 3-6 5, Nelson 0-4 0-0 0, Snead 2-2 2, Bell 1-2 1-1 3, Guenther 0-3 6-8 6. Totals 3-32 14-23.

EAST (51) - Butts 6-7 5-6 17, Fields 1-2 0-0 2, Lamar 1-1 0-0 2, Gaines 4-8 0-0 8, Porter 0-3 0-0 0, Johnson 3-8 0-0 6, Kreutz 1-1 0-0 2, Wright 1-4 1-2 3, Wagner 4-8 0-1 9, Prince 1-4 0-0 2. Totals 22-46 6-9.

Southeast Polk 3 8 3 6 - 20

East 15 11 11 14 - 51

3-point goals - East 1 (Wagner). Fouls - East 20, Southeast Polk 11
