Our History
East High School was established in 1861 and occupied the top floor of the Bryant
School, located at East 9th and Grand. In 1877, the school was moved to the top floor of the Webster School,
located at East 12th and Lyon. Due to overcrowding, the freshman class was moved back to Bryant. Until
1881, the school remained on these premises, and enrollment continued to increase. In 1891, a new, independent
building was built with laboratories, an auditorium, and a cafeteria at East 12th and Grand. This new
building continued to grow in population and had to once again move. In 1911, a new building was built at 13th
and Walker, which still stands today. When the building first opened, the school board was unable to afford new furniture,
because of the enormous cost of its construction. During the first spring of the building's existence, a number of students
used whatever vehicles they could provide to haul the furniture from the old building to the new one. Additions were
made to the building in 1955, 1966, and 1973 due to a growing population.
Our Mission
Through positive experiences in athletics and activities, students at East High
School will be afforded life opportunities that serve to enhance the educational process.
Our
Philosophy
The role of interscholastic
athletics in the development of our young men and women is immeasurable. It is also recognized that the athletic program at
East provides a focal point toward which the interest and enthusiasm of the student body is directed. The success or failure
of its athletic representatives frequently affects the life of the school. School spirit and loyalty on the part of nonparticipating
students develop as a by-product of school sports and activities. Teachers, coaches, and administration must strive to do
what is best for the students and we must strive for excellence in all endeavors.
The athletic program will provide an atmosphere in which all students and coaches strive for
excellence in all school-related activities. Sportsmanship, citizenship, camaraderie, sharing, and caring will be fostered
within individual groups. The use of positive communication between students, teachers, coaches, parents and administration
allows each student to represent herself/himself, East High School, and the community in a positive manner.
